NFL Preview – Los Angeles Rams vs. Denver Broncos

The unbeaten Los Angeles Rams will have to deal with cold weather this week and possibly a little snow, as they visit the Denver Broncos on Sunday. The forecast is calling for a high of just 31 degrees and it is possible that a little snow falls during the game. The Rams have been virtually unstoppable on offense so far this season, as they are averaging 34.6 points per game. Let’s look at Sunday afternoon’s contest and NFL picks.

Date and Time: Sunday, October 14, 2018, 4:05 p.m. ET

The Rams have a potent passing attack led by Jared Goff and one of the best running backs in football in Todd Gurley, but the Los Angeles offense could face a test this week in the cold of Denver and in the altitude. Going from 75 degrees and sunny to the low 30’s and altitude in Denver could be a problem for the Rams. The Broncos have been a very good home team over the years, as they are 39-12 at home since 2012.

The Broncos come into this game reeling at 2-3 and off a bad loss to the New York Jets. Head coach Vance Joseph is on the hot seat and you can make a case that this is a must-win game for Joseph to save his job. The Broncos blew a 10-point lead to Kansas City two weeks ago and then they were blown out last week by the Jets in an ugly performance. “We had great energy in practice, great energy coming out to the game, started the game hot.” Broncos defensive end Derek Wolfe said to the media, “Something — something much deeper is happening here that I can’t even really understand.”

Many people wondered if Joseph would even start this season as the Denver head coach, as GM John Elway said after last season’s 5-11 finish that he considered firing Joseph. The Broncos made a lot of off-season changes, as they added Case Keenum, drafted Bradley Chubb, and second round pick Courtland Sutton has been Denver’s best receiver. The Broncos looked really bad last week and a poor performance at home this week against the Rams could spell the end for Joseph.

Matchup to Watch

If the Broncos can’t stop Gurley then this game is going to be a Los Angeles rout. The Broncos were gashed last week by Isaiah Crowell and the Jets and Gurley is a much better back than Crowell. The Broncos simply must contain Gurley and force Goff to beat them throwing the ball in the cold weather.

Key Stats

The Rams are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games following a straight up win. The Broncos are 6-19-2 ATS in their last 27 games overall. The Broncos are 1-10 ATS in their last 11 games following a straight up loss. The Broncos are 0-3-1 ATS in their last 4 home games. The underdog is 5-0 ATS in the last 5 meetings in this series.

Looking at the total, the Over is 8-2 in the Rams last 10 road games. The Over is 13-6 in the Rams last 19 games on grass. The Under is 8-3 in the Broncos last 11 games in October.

Rams vs. Broncos Picks

This should be a good spot to pick the Broncos, as the Rams are coming off an emotional win last week in Seattle, while Denver should bounce back from last week’s loss to the Jets. The problem I have with taking the Broncos is that I don’t think Joseph is a good coach. I think a big part of Denver’s problems start with him. The situation definitely favors Denver, but the Rams are the better team and they have the better head coach. I will just avoid a side and look at the total.

The Rams have not looked that good on defense this season and I think the Broncos can put up some points in this one. And we know that the Rams should put up plenty of points, despite the cold weather. I will go over the total in this contest.
